The University of Coimbra (UC) (Portuguese: Universidade de Coimbra)is a Portuguese public university in Coimbra, Portugal. Established in 1290, it is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in Europe and the world, the oldest university of Portugal, and one of its largest higher education and research institutions. It is organized into eight different faculties according to a wide range of fields, granting academic bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees in arts, engineerings, humanities, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, sports and technologies. It is a founding member of the Coimbra Group, a group of leading European research universities, whose inaugural meeting it hosted. The University of Coimbra has approximately 20,000 students, and hosts one of the largest communities of international students in Portugal, being the most cosmopolitan Portuguese university

A história da Universidade de Coimbra remonta ao século seguinte ao da própria fundação da nação portuguesa, dado que a Universidade foi criada no século XIII, em 1290, mais especificamente a 1 de Março, quando foi assinado em Leiria, por D. Dinis, o documento Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis, que institui a própria Universidade e pede ao Papa a confirmação. Antes, porém, em 1288, foi elaborada uma Súplica ao Papa Nicolau IV (de que só se conhece o traslado) datada de 17 de Novembro de 1288 e assinada pelos abades dos Mosteiros de Alcobaça, Santa Cruz de Coimbra e S. Vicente de Lisboa e pelos superiores de 24 igrejas e conventos do Reino.
Este documento solicitava a fundação de um “Estudo Geral” e aquelas instituições religiosas assumiam a garantia do seu financiamento. Não se sabe se a Súplica chegou à Santa Sé.
Durante os seus mais de sete séculos de existência, a Universidade foi crescendo, primeiro por toda a Alta de Coimbra e depois um pouco por toda a cidade, encontrando-se actualmente ligada à gestação da ciência e da tecnologia e difusão da cultura portuguesa no mundo.
Continuando a manter o renome de outros tempos, é indiscutível a qualidade do ensino em Coimbra. |
The university was founded, or ratified, in 1290 by King Dinis, having begun its existence in Lisbon with the name Studium Generale (Estudo Geral). Scientiae thesaurus mirabilis, the royal charter announcing the institution of the University was dated 1 March of that year, although efforts had been made at least since 1288 to create this first University in Portugal; it is thus one the oldest of such establishments in the Iberian Peninsula. The Papal confirmation was also given in 1290 (on 9 August of that year), during the Papacy of the Pope Nicholas IV. In accordance with the Papal Bull, all the "licit" Faculties, with the exception of that of Theology, could be established. Thus the Faculties of Arts, Law, Canon Law and Medicine were the first to be created.

| Hoje, a Universidade de Coimbra, conta com oito Faculdades (Letras, Direito, Medicina, Ciências e Tecnologia, Farmácia, Economia, Psicologia e Ciências da Educação, Ciências do Desporto e Educação Física) e cerca de 22 mil alunos.
Actualmente, a Universidade espalha-se por três grandes pólos:

A Alta Universitária, onde se situam a reitoria e os serviços administrativos, partilhando o edifício histórico da Universidade com a Faculdade de Direito. Ainda na Alta Universitária, situam-se as Faculdades de Letras e de Psicologia, bem como os Departamentos de Ciências da Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia. Completam o conjunto o edifício da Biblioteca Geral e Arquivo e a Direcção da FCTUC.

O Pólo II, ou Pólo de Engenharia, onde se situam os departamentos de engenharia da FCTUC.

O Pólo III, ou Pólo de Ciências da Saúde, onde se situam os cursos da área médica, assim como alguns laboratórios de investigação associados.

A Faculdade de Economia, situada num palacete da Avenida Dias da Silva, afastado dos outros 3 pólos.

The University of Coimbra is divided in eight different faculties (Letters, Law, Medicine, Sciences & Technology, Pharmacy, Economics, Psychology & Education Sciences and Sports Sciences & Physical Education), comprising about 20,000 students.
The Faculty of Sciences and Technology (FCTUC) is the largest by number of professors and students, awards the highest number of academic degrees, and manages more classrooms and research units than any other in the UC.
Both the Instituto Nacional de Medicina Legal, an organization under direct supervision of the Portuguese Ministry of the Justice, which provides forensic science services to the police forces and government agencies of Portugal, and the University of Coimbra's teaching hospital, HUC (Hospitais da Universidade de Coimbra), a university hospital known as a centre of research with a broad range of clinical services and medical specialties, are managed by the Faculty of Medicine (FMUC).
The university harbours a huge central library (University of Coimbra General Library), botanical gardens (Botanical Garden of the University of Coimbra), stadiums and other sports facilities (Estádio Universitário de Coimbra sports complex and Campo de Santa Cruz stadium), an astronomical observatory, a publishing house, a private chapel (São Miguel Chapel), a theatre (Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente), and many support facilities such as dining halls and studying rooms.
In addition, the university manages several museums and other cultural organizations, including a science museum (Science Museum of the University of Coimbra), a museum of sacred art (Sacred Art Museum of the University of Coimbra), and an academic museum (Academic Museum of the University of Coimbra).
