Geocache Description:

Blue Caves

In addition to being the third highest island in the Ionion Sea

Zakynthos (Zante) is also the most tranquil. Due to its recurrent rainfalls the island retains its greenery and is known as "The Island of Scents" or "The Flower of the East". Every Spring, Zakyntos transforms into a blooming garden and its air is saturated with the aroma of the wild herbs and eucalyptus.

The Western part of the island is surrounded by rock mountains and numerous caves. The best known cave is Blue Cave which is near the Cape of Skinary, here is found a beautiful blue phosphorescent – like water. Refraction of the light penetrating solely through the water column, filters out all visible forms of light. The only light colours remaining undeflected are blue and white, as well as, ultraviolet radiation. The ultraviolet radiation causes white objects beneath the water to appear irradiated with a shiny white hue.

The caves were a consequence of volcanic activity, upon cooling, the upper part of the lava crusts were formed and cavities of various sizes were created. Erosion and tidewater contributed to the creation of this unique visual phenomenon.

1) In which geological period were the caves formed? How were they formed?
2) Who was the first person to discover these caves?
3) Which colour occurs below water level in the caves?
4) What fauna and flora are present in the caves?
5) Add a photograph of the cave and some phosphorescent object.
6) The photo should be taken from inside of the cave and include positional data.

Then please attach your photo in the Blue Caves with her coordinates. Email your answers to: geo.marzcz@seznam.cz , subject: Blue Caves
