Geocache Description:

GRAY'S SEAT.
The poet Thomas Gray described this spectacular view in 1769. Many artists have painted here, including JMW Turner. The view is excellent with the flat-topped Ingleborough in the distance. On the left are the steep wooded slopes of Aughton, on the right the gentler slopes of Caton Moor. In the middle distance are the chimneys of Claughton brickworks and the tower of Hornby Castle.

The viewpoint was lost in the 1830s when the road was altered.
But has now been reinstated although the view is a little obscured now by trees. Travelling up the slope you walk through ancient woodland rich in wildlife..
The viewpoint is at the centre of the River Lune Millennium Park cycle route and footpath and sculpture trail that follows the river Lune.

Parking
Follow the footpath from crook of Lune car park
There are car parking, toilet and picnic facilities here and a snack bar opens daily in summer (weekends only in winter). A ramp has also been built to ease access down to the railway bridges and to the riverside. It is worth going up to the picnic site by the car park for the sweeping views right up the Lune Valley. Nearby the concessionary footpath leads to Gray’s Seat,

The route to Gray's Seat is mostly footpath but at one point you need to cross the main A6 into Lancaster which is near a very tight bend so care should be taken with small children. Near the cache the path becomes steep in parts, with steps and slippery leaf coverage. So mind your step. You have been warned!

*** IMPORTANT**** The way to the cache is not via the driveway to the caravan park.

This is a 1 ltr box, so a nice size for most small Items.
