This cache is one in a series dedicated to amazing & unusual
organisms. I am astounded by the amazing diversity of plant and
animal life that exists in this world. But the real fascination
lies with those organisms that are amazing, unusual and odd.
These organisms have capabilities that we do not share and can
barely imagine: extraordinary navigational methods, abilities to
regenerate lost limbs, live symbiotically with light-producing
bacteria, reproduce asexually, survive in suspended animation,
change shape and color at will and much more!
Comb Jelly (Phylum Ctenophora)
The phylum Ctenophora contains about 90 species of generally small
and delicate animals known as Comb Jellies. Many species are almost
transparent, a few species can be very beautiful as they have the
ability to produce green and blue colored light. This amazing
feature is called bioluminescence. They ripple with rainbow colors
and are brilliantly bilouminescent at night.
All ctenophores are carnivorous, with some species feeding on a
variety of creatures they catch using tentacles while others have
very large mouths on their bell shaped bodies. They look hollow and
can in fact eat prey larger than themselves. They have hooks in
their gullet to allow them to hold onto their prey and glands that
secrete a poison which paralyses their prey.
Ctenophores are also capable of extraordinary regeneration; even if
half of the creature is destroyed, often the remaining half can
rebuild itself. Cool!
