This cache is in a very unique location near the magnificent Avebury Stone Circle which surrounds the whole village. Constructed around 2600BC the Stones of Avebury have been designated a world heritage site, there is more information at this web site. Whilst Stonehenge is now usually cordoned off and you can’t get too close, at Avebury you can get right up to the stones, feel the texture and even give them a hug!
A National Trust shop, restaurant and archaeological museum can be found in the village centre. The pubs are good too!
This cache was our first, set in September 2001. It was the first ever cache in Wiltshire, and is now the 3rd oldest Virtual and 25th oldest cache in the UK. The cache was originally placed to bring cachers to Avebury area and share its fascinating and amazing features. It was originally a physical cache but was stolen after a year of service so converted to virtual. We have set many more since, but this remains a special place for us.
The Avebury complex has several ancient features in close proximity although most people focus on the biggest stone circle which was “restored” in Victorian times. Consequently the village and main stone circle can be quite busy. Most of the original stones were buried or used for building in medieval times because during that period people thought that the stones held evil spirits. This cache offers the opportunity to get away from the crowds and visit somewhere very quiet, the site of Faulkner's Stone Circle, of which there is sadly little left.
In order to claim this cache, send us a message to give the number of large stones at the coordinates (not the number visible in the distance). The answer is surprising.
Under no circumstances should you post the answers in your log or post photographs of the answer. You must physically visit these exact coordinates in order to log this cache, please do not abuse this requirement (I regret that I will have to delete logs that do not meet these requirements).
