Geocache Description:

Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City. The first two Jacaranda trees were planted at the home of Jacob Daniël Celliers. A bronze plaque can be found on the grounds of the Sunnysige Primary School to commemorate this.

In 1888 the Jacaranda trees were ordered from a Mr. Templeman, a gardener in Cape Town for £10 each. The botanical name for these trees from Brazil is Jacaranda Mimosaefolia.

Walton Jameson, an engineer from the Pretoria municipality, suggested in 1911, that 60km of the streets in Pretoria should be planted with Jacaranda trees. In 1955 448km of the streets in Pretoria had Jacaranda’s planted next to it.

The current Jacaranda trees are maintained by the municipality of Pretoria but no new ones are being planted because they are not indigenous.

The cache location will provide you with a birds eye view of the city were the streets are lined with Jacaranda trees.
