Rotudna svatého Kríže Menšího stojí na rohu ulic Karolíny Svetlé a Konviktské. Nebudete mít problém ji najít, nachází se co by kamenem od nábreží dohodil.
The Rotunda of Saint Minor Cross is situated on the corner of Karolíny Svetlé and Konviktská streets. You will have no problems to find it, it is just nearby the river bank.
Byla postavena jako soucást románského dvorce na konci 11. století na tehdejší obchodní ceste, která vedla z Vyšehradu k prechodum pres Vltavu. Jedná se tedy o jednu z nejstarších staveb Prahy, která se nám dochovala do dnešních dnu.
The Rotunda of Saint Cross was built as a part of the romanesque court at the end of the 11th century on the trade trail which leaded from Vyšehrad to river crossing. It is one of the oldest Prague structures which kept preserved till now.
Postavena byla z nízkých opukových kvádríku. Apsida, to je ten menší jakoby prilepený domecek, je z vnejší strany zdobena lisénami, v horní cásti s obloucky. Puvodne mela jen jedno okno v ose stavby, ale pri rekonstrukci byla probourána další dve. Zajímavostí je, že v apside i lodi byly zazdené hrdlem dovnitr keramické nádoby, které mely zlepšovat akustiku.
It was made of small arenaceous marl blockstones (typical white to yellow colour). The apse, that is the smaller structure like glued to the rotunda, is decorated with pilasters, in upper part with small arches. Originally it had only one window in the axis of the structure and while reconstructed, other two windows were made. What is interesting is the fact that in the apse were walled in ceramic vessels with necks inwards to improve acoustics.
Jako farní kostelík byla rotunda zrušena roku 1784 a od té doby chátrala. V polovine 19. století již byla urcena k demolici. Naštestí nebyla stržena díky spolku Umelecká beseda, který se zasadil o její rekonstrukci, která probehla v letech 1864-1865. Rekonstrukce byla provedena architektem V. I. Ullmannem a malírem B. Wachsmannem, který navrhl i nový oltárík. Na výzdobe vnitrku rotudy se pozdeji podíleli P. Maixner (malba Spasitele z roku 1870), J. Popelka a S. Pinkas. Litinovou novorománskou mríž kolem objektu navrhl J. Mánes.
In the year 1784 the function of the Rotunda as a parish church was canceled and then it just went downhill to decrepitude. In the half of the 19th century it was decided to demolition. Luckily it was saved thanks to organization Umelecká beseda (Art group) which stood up for its reconstruction. So it was reconstructed during the years 1864 - 1865 by architect V.I. Ullmann and painter B. Wachsmann who also designed a new small altar. Then other artists took part in interier decorating, P. Maixner (painting of Messiah, 1870), J. Popelka and S. Pinkas. The cast iron bar of the romanesque revival architecture around the building was designed by J. Mánes.
V interiéru se rovnež zachovaly zbytky gotických maleb Korunování Panny Marie ze 14. století.
Ke vzniku rotundy se váže povest. Na puvodním míste prý byl rybník do kterého byla vhozena ukrižovaná dívka. Byl to trest za to, že se postavila svým rodicu a nechala se pokrtít. Jedné bourkové noci se pak jako boží znamení kríž vztycil nad hladinou. Pri oprave rotudy se údajne ztrouchnivelý kríž v základech stavby skutecne našel.
In the interior are also conserved rests of gothic paintings of Coronation of Virgin Maria from the 14th century. There is a legend about the Rotunda´s establishment. On the original place allegedly was a pond and a crucified girl was thrown into it. It was a punishment that she stood out against her parents and let herself christen. One night after it the cross hoisted like a divine sign above the water table. During the reconstruction reportedly the rotten wooden cross in the building foundations was found.
