Geocache Description:

A cache at the former site of St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church.

At this site in 1947 an old barn owned by Mr. J. Kinahan was torn down and excavation started for St. Anthony's RC Church on land owned by Tom Cummins. Approximately $1200 had been donated to purchase cement, gravel, lumber, and other necessities. The work was done under supervision of Jim Cummins who worked without renumeration. All work was a gift of love from the manual end of it to coffee and lunches brought to workers from women of the parish. Once the building was covered in, an altar was built by Jim Cummins in the basement and the first mass was held May 16th, 1948. One the upstairs was usable but not complete mass was celebrated in the church proper. By October 1950 work was advanced enough to celebrate the blessing of the church by Bishop Klein of Saskatoon. 1958 brought great preparations for the celebration of 10th anniversary of the church. In 1973 St. Anthony's celebrated its 25th anniversary with Bishop Mahoney presiding over the special occasion. In its first 33 years St. Anthony's celebrated three weddings and numerous baptisms, first communions and confirmations. St. Anthony's was proudly was never in debt from the time the first sod was turned. Over the years attendance dwindled. Finally in 2002 St. Anthony's held its last service. The church was moved to the Knights of Columbus youth camp at Blackstrap along with the original pews. (Thanks to fqbwgt for this information). This commemorative sign was raised to mark the original Church site.

The cache is an ammo can. There is a small slough near the cache so keep an eye on your kids while there.
