Geocache Description:

A short minute or so walk from Petersfield Station - Platform 2 side, though not on the station itself, ideal cache to do in the evenings or weekends. Accessible by wheelchair until literally reaching the cache whereby you will have to crouch down. Good to break a journey up if you're going to London Waterloo/Portsmouth or simply visiting the area! Cache placed in 2008 - now on container no. 3.

This cache is part of the SideTracked series - For more information on SideTracked Caches, please visit SideTracked

The cache is a small lock box with room for small swaps, TB's etc. Feel free to leave any old rail tickets and any other railway memorabilia! Parking available, suitable for buggies and pushchairs although due to moving vehicles, children should be supervised. Say hello to the friendly platform staff if you get a chance :)

History

Petersfield station buildings date back to 1859 and are of a "town" type - quite picturesque. The station has two tracks and two platforms, although a 3rd one used to branch into the coal yard. A siding used to be present next to platform one although this closed in the 1990's (though still visible where the trackbed was, now the entrance to the car park). A fourth platform on the north side of the level crossing served the now closed Midhurst branch, closed in 1955.

There used to be a halt to the south of the station called Woodcroft. It was built to serve the local naval establishment. Because of its naval nature it wasn't featured on many maps, some maps however did mark it by a little tab but without a name.
