The Monkey's Puss is an interesting rock feature which can be found on a rocky hillside near the village of Steelend, on the B914 near the junction with the A823.
The monkey's Puss is known in Geological terms as a Mimetolith.
A mimetolith is a natural topographic feature, rock outcrop, rock specimen, mineral specimen, or loose stone, the shape of which resembles something else. This could be the shape of an animal, human face or some other familiar shape. In this case it is the shape of a monkey's face.
The Monkey's Puss will have taken shape over the course of hundreds of years through natural erosion and the changing weather climate and natural elements.
Park at the published co-ordinates. The parking area is an access road to a farm so please be careful not to block it.
Look west and to the north side of the road, towards Steelend, and you should see 'The Monkey's Puss' in all it's glory. This spot will afford you with the best view, you do not need to go into the field.
Due to Geocaching.com and Earthcache.org now requiring that the finder has to prove that they have learnt something you will also have to do both of the following:
1. Estimate the distance between the monkeys eyes and nose.
2. Take a photo of yourself and/or GPS showing 'The Monkey's Puss' in the background.
Thanks.
