How to get there?
The village of Erdut is in 30 km east of Osijek, on the right bank of River Danube. It is on the border of Croatia, having a bridge and border crossing to Serbia.
Parking is just about 165 m away from the cache and 100 m from the castle.

History in a nutshell
The village was first mentioned in a document in 1335, the castle in 1472, as the property of the provost of Titel. The castle was built in the 15th century, on a bluff 70 meters above the Danube, providing an excellent view and controlling traffic on the Danube.
It was under Turkish rule between 1526-1687. After being own by the crown and Baron of Zuan. Its last owner was the Adamovich and Cseh family. By the time they acquired it, the castle was uninhabited, as shown on a mid-19th century drawing.
Its last owner was Irénke Cseh at the time of its nationalization after the second world war.
The castle was damaged in July 1991, during the Croatian War of Independence, in an artillery attack launched by the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA).

Architecture
In 1891, the 15th century, squared shape, partly ruined residential tower was modified by the Adamovich-Cseh family to serve as their mausoleum. The top two floors were torn down. The internal staircase and the remains of the wall paintings destroyed. The coat of arms of the families were placed above the entrance.
Besides this tower, another well-preserved part is the bastion in the northwest corner. The originally four-storey, round tower shows Italian Renaissance influence. On the upper level, twenty brick consols support the rim that was fitted with openings to pour tar on the enemy. You can also observe keyhole-shaped portholes.
There is one more tower, built in the same style about 40 m below the castle. Some believe that it is not at its original location, but got to its current place during a landslide in 1860, but excavations of the 1970s revealed part of the outer defense system, showing that the lower rectangular tower was connected with the upper round tower.
The rusty iron ladders were built during the Croatian War, as the fortress was used again as an observation point - as for hundreds of years in the past.

Please, please use utmost stealth when locals or other muggles are present! Cache maintenance requires 300 km drive. :-(
