Modrý lev

Na tomto míste stával slavný hostinec “U modrého lva”, postavený v roce 1243. Do jeho zrušení v roce 1934 byl jednoznacne nejstarším podnikem tohoto typu na území Brna.

Hospoda už odedávna poskytovala potrebné osvežení kupcum po namáhavém brodení blízké reky Svratky. Její oblíbenost ale neklesla ani po postavení dreveného mostu pres Svratku v první polovine 14. století, ani pri následném vylepšení mostu na most kamenný v roce 1372.

Brno dostalo pro tuto hospodu právo mílové a hostinec poskytoval i konskou príprež pro obchodníky, kterí se potrebovali dostat pres stoupání v dnešní ulici Pekarské k Starobrnenské bráne na dnešním Šilingove námestí.

Modrý lev se dostal dokonce i do povesti o Brnenském drakovi: “Do hospody U Modrého lva prišel reznický tovaryš, který chodil vandrem po svete. Všichni v hospode vypráveli jen o drakovi...”

Tehdejší hospoda se podobala z dnešního pohledu spíše penzionu, kde mohli návštevníci prespat a tím se pripravit na ranní príjezd na trh ve meste.

V roce 1934 byla budova hostince kvuli velmi špatnému stavu zbourána a na jejím míste byl postaven nynejší bytový dum a budova pošty (dnes Ceské Sporitelny). Jediná památka na tuto historicky velmi významnou budovu je mozaika brnenského malíre a sochare Milana Klvani na budove pošty.

On this place stood a very famous pub named “U modrého lva” (“the Blue lion”), built in year 1243. Until its demolition in 1934 it was without any doubt the oldest pub in Brno.

The pub provided much needed refreshing after difficult wading of the nearby Svratka river. Its popularity didn't decrease even after a wooden bridge over Svratka was built in the first half of the 14th century, not even after upgrading the bridge to a stone one in 1372.

The pub also offered horses for merchants who needed to get to Old-town gate, which was accessible by contemporary Pekarska street.

The blue lion is also mentioned in a tale about the Brno dragon: “To the pub “U modreho lva” came a journeyman butcher, who wandered around. Everyone was talking about the dragon.”

Pub at that was much more like contemporary bed-and-breakfast. The customers could have a sleep and in the morning go to markets in the center of Brno.

In the year 1934 the building was demolished due to its bad state and on its place a post office and an apartment building were built. The only thing that commemorates this very interesting and important building is the blue lion mosaic on the post office building. It was made by painter and sculptor Milan Klvana.
