Geocache Description:

Warren wood is located between the cliff tops and residential areas of the town. It lies inside the
boundary of the North Norfolk Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). It is visible from many
areas of the town due to Cromer being situated on the Holt-Cromer ridge and the woodlands elevated
position. Overall it is an important part of the landscape aesthetics of the Cromer area and is used as
part of a series of public open spaces along the cliff tops. The site is dominantly broadleaf with
occasional conifer and evergreen

Within the woodland are a number of undated pits and a substantial marl pit with lime kilns dating to the
18th century. The kilns are said to have been in ruins in 1886. The spoil for this pit forms Stoney Hill
and it is said that this was dug by Napoleonic prisoners of war. The pit was the location of a café from
the 1930’s until it was demolished in 1968. The base is still visible as is the water pipe which runs
through the wood
