St. Edward the Confessor
Another contribution to this series, started by sadexploration, is St. Edward the Confessor, Sutton Park.
There have always been more Catholics in this part of Surrey since the Reformation than in any other rural areas of the county. In 1521 King Henry VIII granted the Sutton estate to Sir Richard Weston, a prominent member of his court. The house stood not far from the present church, but Weston soon began to plan a new one and Sutton Place was built not far away. Sir Richard's son, Francis, became implicated in the scandals surrounding Queen Anne Boleyn and was beheaded in 1536, before his father's death.
For much, if not all the time, the old religion was practised at Sutton Place. There were suspicions and the house was searched unsuccessfully for a priest called Morgan in 1591.
After the emancipation of the Catholics more people were able to gather openly for Mass and a larger chapel was needed at Sutton Place. After some changes in the ownership of the house it became difficult to hold services there, and in 1874 a bequest provided money for the building of a new church. This was opened in 1876, although it was not consecrated until 1950.
