Sermão da Montanha Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

bacalhau: The levada - and the way to the final cache - is completely destroyed, as well as the cache itself. Exactly at the cache-spot the workes installed a storage area for building material. They informed me it will take at least more than one year till the levada will be walkable again. This measure is to set the area free for other caches/cachers.
I'll see later what's possible in this area.

Geocache Description:

Para os meus amigos portugueses eu pus uma Hiperligação à tradução dos textos das minhas caches completas. Clique em cima ao "Related Web Page".

Be suppliantly – go to Jesus!
After I want you to go to the very end – and may be beyond. You will be busy for quite a time. I suggest starting in the early morning. Don’t do it if there’s too much fog or rain on the mountains. You should have a pen and a piece of paper with you. A flashlight might also be helpful.
You know the “Sermon on the Mount” (Bergpredigt/Sermão da Montanha).of Jesus? On the pillars in front of Jesus (on the map named as “Cristo Rei”) you can read all his advices. To get the coordinates of the cache you have to read them. Start with the pillar at the very left side:
Pillar 1: the number of the letter “M” plus 1
Pillar 2: the number of the letter “S” multiplied by 2
Pillar 3: the number of the letter “A” divided by 2
Pillar 4: the number of the letter “N” plus 1
Pillar 5: the number of lines of the advice
Pillar 6: the number of the letter “Z”
Pillar 7: the number of the letter “P” multiplied by 2
Pillar 8: the number of the letter “R”
The last two numbers you will find on the marble table in front of the left pillar:
N° 9: how much fish do you see?
N° 10: the number of the pieces of bread minus 2
Insert these 10 numbers into the coordinates as follows:
N: 32° Pil1 Pil2,Pil3 Pil4 Pil5
W: 017° Pil6 Pil7,Pil8 N°9 N°10
The coordinates are in minutes and decimal minutes, n o t in minutes and seconds!
You got the coordinates? Go! A few meters down the street (see gallery) you see a levada crossing under the street. Follow the levada easterly. Minutes later you cross a country road which runs from top down to Calheta. A few steps upwardly and you can see the cache (if your eyes are good enough). Follow again the levada until you reach another steep country road. Follow the road. Later Spoiler 1 and 2 helps you to find the cache.
Once you found the cache you have got two options:
- go back on the same path to Jesus or
- continue the levada until you are in front of a tunnel (hope there’s enough energy in your flashlight, the tunnel is long). Crossing the tunnel gives you a small idea what does it meant to dig a water channel through solid rocks.
It would also be favorable to have a second car parked at the Encumeada pass to get back to your car with Jesus.
If you didn’t succeed to find the cache (in case you received wrong numbers from Jesus), you will find above the tunnel under N 32° 44.440 W 017° 04.222 a micro cache (Spoiler3) with the coordinates of the real cache (not to log, only for information).
I hid this cache on “Good Friday”. It’s my contribution to this special day.
Let’s have some words about the terrain: you are a little bit in the outback. You have to have a good condition. There are descents and ascents. Take to eat and to drink with you. You have to be free of vertigo and giddiness. A big part of the hike you are walking on the top of a wall of 40 cm width and always the abyss beside you. Mountain boots and an anorak are obligatory.
If the worst comes to the worst, mobile is also obligatory for emergency aid (Tel. N°: 112 – mark your position with your GPS and tell the mountain rescue service). Aid would come from Ribeira Brava – so it would take a while.
