Caracterização
No III milénio a.C., o território que se estende para Norte da Ria de Alvor até ao sopé da Serra de Monchique tinha como lugar central um povoado com mais de 10 hectares, situado no término montante do troço outrora navegável da Ribeira da Torre e estendendo-se sobre um cabeço destacado, junto ao lugar de Alcalar, a cerca de 5 Km da Mexilhoeira Grande, em pleno Barrocal Algarvio.

Em torno desse povoado situavam-se outros núcleos habitacionais periféricos e, aglomerados sobre as pequenas elevações circundantes, foram edificados diversos túmulos megalíticos, constituindo uma necrópole com cerca de dúzia e meia de sepulcros agrupada em vários núcleos sepulcrais e revelando uma grande diversidade de soluções arquitectónicas.
O monumento a que se atribuiu o número 7, o mais bem conservado da necrópole e onde têm decorrido trabalhos de conservação e restauro, é um templo funerário edificado no III milénio a . C. constituído por um cairn, mamoa de pedras que envolve um tholos, construção com corredor e cripta coberta em falsa cúpula. A mamoa é contida por um murete em alvenaria de xisto, que se prolonga sobre o enchimento pétreo numa calçada periférica. Com planta circular, o edifício atinge um diâmetro de quase 27m, com uma fachada rectilínea, voltada a nascente, em cujo centro se abre a única entrada no edifício monumental. A partir daí, o acesso à cripta fazia-se por um estreito e comprido corredor coberto por grandes lajes de calcário e orientado ao sol nascente. Num claro dispositivo de inibição do acesso à cripta, esta passagem foi segmentada em troços cada vez mais estreitos, demarcados por ombreiras monolíticas e por soleiras em cutelo. A cripta ocupa o centro geométrico do túmulo e o seu pavimento foi revestido por um lajeado de calcário.
Tendo em vista a valorização dos monumentos, foram efectuadas escavações arqueológicas, nomeadamente, no Monumento 7, cuja consolidação e restauro se encontram em fase de concurso, e prospecções, por métodos geofísicos, no Monumento 15. Está prevista a construção de um Centro Interpretativo e de Acolhimento, assim como a colocação de sinalética explicativa. Encontra-se em preparação a edição de material de apoio ao visitante.

Description
In the third millennium BC, the focal point of the territory stretching from north from the Alvor inlet to the foothills of the Monchique range was a settlement measuring over 10 hectares located at the end of a once navigable section of the Torre river. This settlement stood on a hillock next to what is now Alcalar, some five kilometres from Mexilhoeira Grande, in the Portimão area and in the midst of the Algarve’s barrocal (limestone coastal strip).

Other inhabited sites grew up around this central settlement and around eighteen megalithic tombs were built in different groups on the surrounding low hills, forming a necropolis with a wide range of architectural styles.
Monument 7, a funeral temple built in the third millennium BC, is the best preserved tomb in the necropolis and has been the focus for conservation and restoration work. It consists of a cairn – a mound of stones around a tholos, a construction with a corridor and a crypt covered by a vault. The mound is surrounded by a low schist wall that continues over the stone filling to form a pathway that runs all around the monument. The diameter of this circular building reaches almost twenty-seven metres and has a straight, east-facing façade with the only access to the monument in the centre. Access to the crypt itself is then via a long, narrow east-facing corridor covered with large slabs of limestone. In a clear attempt to restrict access to the crypt, the corridor is divided into ever-narrower sections, marked by vertical monoliths and raised door-stones. The crypt, whose flooring is covered by a limestone slab, lies at the geometrical centre of the tomb.
Archaeological excavations have been carried out to upgrade the monuments, particularly at Monument 7 (tenders are currently being invited for the consolidation and restoration work), and geophysical prospecting at Monument 15. A Reception and Study Centre will be built and explanatory signs will be installed. Support material for visitors is currently being prepared for publication.
