Geocache Description:

WARNING: this is a night cache!

Behind enemy lines...

You have a mission...

Finding a secret detonator box before daybreak!

With a task force that can run out of resources any minute...

It may turn you into madness!

This cache is only for tough guys. The expedition is about 12 kilometres through dark woods. It will take you at least 5 - 6 hours to complete it. The target can only be found during night.

You need some advanced technology. However, do not panic, your (simple) digital camera and your GPS will do it for you! During the expedition you will find out how to use your digital camera as an infrared device.

You must also have some basic knowledge about positioning and co-ordinates. You will need to make "projections" and you must bring a "triangulation" to a good end.

So, prepare your trip very well and read this text carefully.

What do you need?

-Caution: do not depart on this mission on your own (team of 2-3 persons is OK)!

-Safety: make sure you have a (charged) GSM with you in case of...

-Light: you need an electric torch (lamp) with enough spare batteries.

-Equipment: you must absolutely have a digital camera with you.

-Information: do not forget to bring this cache description with you.

-Clothes: some parts of the walk are quite muddy and wet, so put on the right clothing.

-Drinks: 12km in dark woods is quite a challenge! Take some water/drinks with you.

-Maps: you will need a topographic map of the environment situated at the north and west of WP1 (e.g. a print-out of OZI or Mapsource on your GPS).

-Know-how: it is a good idea to practice in advance: do some projections and perform a triangulation (you can do this on your GPS or by hand - in that case take pencil, paper and protractor with you).

-Sight: do not forget your glasses: some WPs are quite small to read.

-Backup/Help: see below for help when you can not find a particular waypoint...

Starting your mission

To find the secret detonator you have to discover several beacons placed by the enemy. Make sure it is completely dark! You can only find these beacons during night. You are looking for devices, "things"...

WP1: is your starting point N50°16.388 E5°37.943. You will find there a tag pointing to WP2.

Please respect nature: leave your car here!!! You would get stuck anyway, so do not even try it!

WP2: find here the first beacon. Look about 15cm above ground level. Note that you can NEVER spot a beacon from the path. Put your lamp off!! It is important to realise that the position of a beacon is never given accurately. Hence, when you are arriving at the location, start looking for it in an area with a radius of up to 40 meters around the given position. Once you found the beacon you must do 2 things:

-measure its exact location (with your GPS), as projections and triangulations always starts from the actual position of the beacon itself,

-read very carefully the tag next to the beacon!

WP4: will give you 2 angles: the upper angle is the bearing of WP5 measured at WP4; the lower angle is the bearing of WP5 measured at WP3.

WP6: this beacon is invisible in the dark as it is infrared, but its position is given very accurately and you can use the spoiler photograph on this page (bottom picture). So, spotting it must be possible with your torch. Once you found it, use your digital camera and point it to the tag (from a distance of about 15cm). You will notice that your camera is sensitive for infrared light! Look at the display of the camera and count the number of light flashes per minute:

 5 – 10 flashes/min, go:  827m 183.6°

10 – 20 flashes/min, go:  491m  98.4°

20 – 40 flashes/min, go:  473m 176.4°

40 – 80 flashes/min, go:  738m 150,3°

WP7: is a transparant plastic tag and invisible in the dark! But its position is given also accurately. Spot it with your lamp!

WP8: reveals the position of the detonator box!

We wish you good luck on this Mission to Madness,

CB
