Sam Jones, owner of the Berkley Machine Works and Foundry Company in Norfolk, VA, commissioned the construction of Berkley Castle and Berkley Manor on Silver Lake in the 1950s. Sam enjoyed sharing the “easy-going solitude and unique flavor” of Ocracoke Island with his friends, employees and clients, inviting them to weekend parties at the Castle.

Sam was credited with bolstering the economy on Ocracoke with the construction of his Castle and Manor, as well as providing numerous employment opportunities to residents. He was known to have hired everyone he could. Sam was very much a part of the Ocracoke community. He belonged to both churches, bought the island’s first ambulance and made donations to the Boy Scouts and Fire Department. He had a group of women flown to Norfolk to select new dresses for themselves and purchased a truckload of furniture to distribute.

Sam owned several dozen Ocracoke horses and kept them penned at Berkley Manor. He was known to sit on the fence and wave a check for anyone with enough nerve to get on one of his selected horses. A former member of the Mounted Boy Scout Troop, Sam was fond of the horses and especially HIS horse, Ikey D. Whenever there was entertainment at the Castle or Manor, Ikey D. was welcomed inside to enjoy the fun.

Sam later purchased Springer’s Point, a large tract of high land located on the sound west of the lighthouse, which he called “Teach’s Castle” or the “old Blackbeard Plantation”. Today, Springer’s Point has been set aside as a nature preserve for all to enjoy.

“the only lasting Monument that we can leave to posterity is what we give of ourselves, of our knowledge and of our experience, which will continue in the lives of others.”
-Sam Jones

Sam died in 1977 and the castle stood empty until 1994 when it was purchased along with the adjacent properties for $800,000.

As for Sam’s final wishes, they were carried out per his instructions.

This cache is a library cache. Please exchange reading books only and place the cache exactly as it was found so that it is not muggled.
