Thames Path - Windsor Bridge
Windsor Bridge has ancient origins. A wooden bridge existed here in the 1100's. William the First first established a fortification near here, known as Clewer Hill, which subsequently became what we know as Windsor Castle. The present bridge opened in 1824.
Windsor has been without a direct road link to Eton since April 1970, when engineers decided that the old cast iron bridge was no longer up to the task of carrying thousands of vehicles, including buses, day in day out, as cracks had developed in the supporting cast iron girders.

I remember taking many a Routemaster bus from Slough to Windsor in my early-teens that crossed the bridge. I loved to sit on the upper deck and look over the bridge to the river below. It made me feel queasy every time!
Because the bridge is such a busy place it was virtually impossible to place a regular cache here. Subsequently the cache is now a crafty other. With the additional hint this should be an easy find... without it could take you some considerable time. Please bring your own pen or pencil to sign the log.
Stroller accessible as long as you are OK carrying down a few steps from the bridge. Wheelchairs can almost certainly access the cache from the east, but not from the bridge.
Please be very careful when retrieving and replacing the cache as you will almost certainly be observed by passing muggles.
Finally - please log your visit with initials only - no date required.
Thank you.
