Lake Isaac waterfowl sanctuary is an example of a “pothole” or
“kettle” lake. It is located off of the Big Creek Parkway and is
part of the Big Creek Reservation of the Cleveland Metroparks.
There is a trail from the parking lot that you can follow to the
other side of the lake. The area is filled with a large variety of
wildlife including migratory birds, deer and many other animals.
You will need to hike part of the trail to claim credit for this
cache.
During the Pleistocene epoch, (~1,800,000 – 12,000 BC) Ohio
experienced at least four different glacial advances. These periods
are known as the Nebraskan, Kansan, Illinoian, and Wisconsin
advances. During this time huge continental glaciers spread south
and covered the land. These continental glaciers may have been 3000
m thick in some places. Each time these massive ice sheets advance
and retreat they have a tremendous effect on the landscape. They
altered drainage patterns, carve valleys, move and deposit
sediment. The landscape of Ohio is covered with glacial formations
such as kettles, moraines, and kames.
Kettles form when a portion of a retreating glacier breaks off from
the main sheet and becomes buried in the glacial outwash. As the
ice melts it leaves a depression in the ground. This depression is
called a kettle, because the shape is reminiscent of a kettle used
in cooking. Kettles often fill with water and are then called
kettle lakes or kettle ponds. If the kettle is filled with water
year round it is classified as a kettle lake.
Logging requirements: Answer the following questions and post a
photo of yourself and GPS at the cache site. Update 5/20 logs
without photos will have to be deleted, so please post the photos
in a timely manner.
1. When did the lake form?
2. Hike along the trail and use your GPSr to measure the length and
width of the lake.
Cleveland Metropark guidelines require you to stay on the marked
trail so please make your measurements from the trail and not the
actual edge of the lake. Please e-mail your answers to the
questions as soon as possible after posting your log. Logs without
accompanying e-mails will be deleted.
Thanks to the Metroparks for allowing the placement of this cache.
