Geocache Description:

Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit

This cache is not at the location given - the co-ordinates given are for the front of the Cathedral.

Another contribution to this series, started by sadexploration, is Guildford Cathedral.

The Cathedral Church of the Holy Spirit is claimed to be the only Anglican cathedral to be built on a new site in the south of England since the Reformation. Work on the cathedral, designed by Sir Edward Maufe, began in 1936. It struggled into being through the depression of the 1930s, the Second World War and the austerity of the 1950s before finally being consecrated in 1961.

It stands in a commanding spot on Stag Hill - so named because the Kings of England used to hunt here - and its solid red brick outline is visible for miles around. Its bricks are made from clay taken from the hill on which it stands.

The tower is 160 feet high, and at the top of the tower stands a 15 foot gilded angel, which turns in the wind.

The Cathedral interior offers an overall impression of elegant lightness and space created by the pale Somerset limestone pillars, white Italian marble floor and the light flooding in through tall lancet windows.

As a number of you are aware Woking Wonders other mad hobby is campanology which can involve on occasions ringing for 3hr+ nonstop. Therefore, to do something a little different to celebrate Guildford Cathedral (which is regarded as the place where all the posh bods go to ring in Surrey - WW's not included), we would like you to find some information out before leaving home to attempt this cache. This information will then give you the co-ordinates necessary in order to find the cache.

1. How many Church Tower Bells can be rung at Guildford Cathedral? AB

2. What is the weight of the heaviest bell (called a tenor) in the tower (to the nearest hundred weight)? CD

3. When were the bells originally installed into the Cathedral? 19EF

4. Guildford Cathedral tower forms part of the Guildford Diocesan Guild of Church Bellringers. When was this Guild formed? 19GH

You now have the co-ordinates necessary to do the following calculation to find the cache

N51 1(A+C).(E-G)(G+H)E W000 3(H-G).(A+C)(B+C)(A+D+F)

You can check your answers for this puzzle here.

The cache has a log book only plus micro certificates and hand made micro churches but no pen so please bring one with you.

If anybody would like to expand this series please do, we would just ask that you could let sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
