Der tertiäre Vulkanismus der Rhön
Zur Zeit des Tertiärs war die Rhön eine von Seen und dichter Vegetation bedeckte Beckenlandschaft mit lebhafter vulkanischer Tätigkeit. Der Aufstieg der Magmen hat indirekt mit der Alpen-Faltung im Süden zu tun. Die gewaltige Energie, die dort beim Zusammenprall von Europa und Afrika frei wurde, führte noch in mehreren hundert Kilometern Entfernung zu einem Aufreißen von Bruchzonen. In den Rissen stieg das Magma auf.
Basalt ist ein feinkristallines, dunkles („basisches“) vulkanisches Gestein: Als dünnflüssige Schmelze aus einer tief gelegenen Magmenkammer dringt er zur Erdoberfläche empor und erkaltet dort.
Fließt die Schmelze als Lava an der Oberfläche aus, bilden sich meist schild- oder kegelförmige Vulkane. Bleibt sie unter der Oberfläche, so spricht man von einem Subvulkan.
Er ist an der Oberfläche zunächst nicht sichtbar, kann aber später durch Verwitterung freigelegt werden.
Die Bedeutung des Basaltbruches am Lindenstumpf
Der Lindenstumpf ist eine der typischen Basaltkuppen der bayerischen Rhön. Durch den ehemaligen Steinbruchbetrieb wurde diese Kuppe „aufgeschnitten“ und zeigt nun beispielhaft ihren Innenbau aus gut ausgebildeten Basaltsäulen. Basalte liefern als Straßen- und Bahndammschotter, in der Beton- und Steinwollindustrie sowie gemahlen als Mineraldünger einen wertvollen Rohstoff.

The tertiary volcanism of the Rhoen highlands
While the tertiary, the Rhoen highland was a basin landscape covered by heavy vegetation and lakes with vibrant volcanism activity. The ascension of magma is related indirectly to the convolution of the Alps in the south. The huge energy, released there by collision of Europe and Africa, caused the scarify of rupture zones several hundred kilometers away.
Magma ascended in the cracks. Basalt is a fine-crystalline, dark ("alkaline"), volcanic stone: As fused material, it bubbles up from a magma chamber deep down to the earth surface and cools off there. If the fused material -lava- flows out at the surface, often volcanoes shaped like shields or cones arises.
If the lava stays under the earth surface, they are called subvolcanoes. At first, a subvolcano is invisible at the surface, but it can get exposed later by weathering.
The meaning of the basalt stone pit at the Lindenstump
The Lindenstump is one of the basalt crests that are typical for the Bavarian Rhoen. While the stone pit was in use, this crest was "sliced" and shows now exemplyfied the inner structure of well developped basalt columns.
Basalt is used as broken rock for streets and railways, for concrete- and stonewool-industry, and as a valuable raw material for mineral fertilizer as well.
