Durante
Fernando.
Beatriz mãe do rei Português D. Dinis.
quadrangular, encostada ao pano sul, de que resta a parte inferior;

The occupation of Serpa back to the pre-history being, at the time
of the Roman occupation, a town that was the connection of Pax
Julia (Beja) to the south of Hispânia (Spain). We believe that here
there has been a fortress to protect the path of the Roman Empire.
During the re-conquest of territory by Christians, Serpa and his
castle were first conquered by troops commanded by D. Afonso
Henriques or by the group led by Geraldo Sem-Pavor in an incursion
of 1166 in the region beyond the River Guadiana.

Later, the offensive from Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur, again be
under the Muslim until its recovery by D. Sancho II in 1232 and
delivered to the field of his brother, D. Fernando.
When D. Afonso III completed the conquest of the Algarve, Afonso X
of Castile challenged him legally the areas of Serpa. This area and
all the land beyond the river Guadiana was in that dispute that
only ended in 1283, with its transfer to the Queen D. Beatriz
mother of the Portuguese king D. Dinis. Under the reign of D. Dinis
was the rectification of the Portuguese border and Serpa receives
its first Foral in 1295, when began the reconstruction of the
ancient fortress Muslim.
Serpa and his castle were used by the Master of Avis during the
crisis of 1383-1385, served as a base of operations for its troops
in the territory incursions Spanish. Two centuries later, during
the crisis of succession, 1580 Serpa and his castle fell in front
of Spanish troops commanded by Sancho d'Avila.
Occupied during the War of the Spanish Succession, his house of
gunpowder exploded destroying one of the towers, following the
withdrawal of Spanish forces under the command of the Duke of
Ossuna in 1707. Later, in 1870 the masonry walls and the towers
suffered major collapses.
The wall of main fortress is enhanced by the Tower of Watchtower,
square plant, the cloth in striped cloaks south, which remains the
bottom; by a tower in the form of a cube of semicircular plant by
the same hand and a tower of rectangular shape in the southeast
angle, next to which is visible part of barbacã that
involved.
The square boundary to the Church of Santa Maria (ancient Muslim
mosque) rises on the call of the Clock Tower, plant square, where
stands the bell, with coruchéus of a cone surrounded by cuted
walls. Remains of some of the town, was transformed into clock in
1440, is on the third tower watch oldest in the country.
