ver since the concept of prime numbers was
realised, geeks all over the world have competed to display
what can surely only be described as their machismo of
geekness, in the discovery of the largest prime number. Today
their search continues, using high powered
super-computers.
Presently the largest known prime numbers would require nearly
10 million digits if they were to be written out fully (rather than
described as an exponent plus/minus a constant, which is how they
are usually expressed). In September 2006, Central Missouri State
University discovered the prime number 2^32582657-1 - a number of
9808358 digits in length. |

The discoverers of the first prime number to be found exceeding
10 million digits in length will be awarded a $100,000US prize by
the Electronic Frontier Foundation.
