Arch - Eland
This cache is part of a series of Architectural buildings and
sites we have noticed that stand out from the rest. Some old, some
new, a few well known while others are hidden away. The aim of this
series is to raise awareness to the importance and diversity of
architecture around us.
This iconic concrete structure has been installed in Braamfontein,
heralding the entrance into the city - at 5,5 metres in height and
weighing 50 tons, this concrete Eland stands at the corner of
Bertha and Ameshoff streets. Uniplanted with Highveld krantz
plants; aloes, trees and grasses whose growth and seasonal changes
are an integral part of this sculpture.
It was set in place at the Gateway site on Saturday, 18 August
2007. Flanked by Wits University, the site continues to be a point
of convergence for secondary and tertiary student bus commuters and
employees from the area. The significant social history of the site
combined with its strategic axial flows to the Cultural Arc, made
this site ideal for a large scale iconic sculptural intervention.
Designed by artist Clive van den Berg, Eland was selected from
submissions from five artists, invited to take part by the
Braamfontein Art Committee. In van den Bergs own words "Eland
places a large representation of an eland on a corner where it has
long since disappeared. This slightly forlorn image of a majestic
animal would I imagine bring beauty and grandeur to a busy place. I
hope it would also be an emblem that prompts reflection on our
relationship to the past, and to the interconnectedness of
environmental, cultural and spiritual destinies."
Some good examples of Clive van den Berg's work can be viewed at
the Goodman Gallery.
Due to the busy location of this cache
- only attempt alone if you are confident that the cache can be
retrieved and hidden without being compromised.
