Geocache Description:

This cache is hidden just outside the grounds of Holy Innocents Church in Southwater.

Holy Innocents The foundation stone of this church was laid in 1848 on December 28 – Holy Innocents Day. The stones for the outer walls came from a stone pit at Stammerham, which is situated close to the point where the Horsham by-pass now bridges the Tower Hill to Christ's Hospital road. Stone for the inner walls came from a small quarry close to Bax Castle. The cut stones for the window and door reveals, arches and pillars were all from a quarry near the Sun Oak in St Leonards Forest.

The windows in the south and east walls are typical examples of stained glass windows of the Victorian period and are believed to date from the construction of the building. The south wall contains both a two-light and three-light window, the stained glass of which is of recent design and construction. The two-light window depicts the Southwater Village Wheelwright in one light and the Blacksmith in the other, both of whom were members of the Piper Family (the donors). The three-light window was presented by Southwater farmers and friends and depicts farming activities carried out in the parish together with the three main farm buildings. The windows in the north aisle depict the history of Christs Hospital from its inception in 1552 to the arrival of the Girls from Hertford in 1985. The windows are to be a gift from the Old Blues and Friends of Christs Hospital.

The cache is hidden outside of the church grounds in a place that requires you to stand very close to the main road. The road is rarely busy but I advise that, if you have chidren with you, they stand INSIDE the grounds - you will see that this is perfectly possible when you reach the correct spot. You may prefer to approach the cache from within the grounds anyway.

If any body would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication
