Der Lateinstein befindet sich an der Grenze des früheren Schottenhofes, eines urkundlich erstmals 1322 erwähnten Freihofes, der 1961/62 abgerissen wurde. Ein Mosaik „Darstellung des alten Schottenhofes“ von Erwin Lang (1963) ist nahe des Caches auf der Hausmauer der sich heute auf dem Gelände befindlichen Wohnhausanlage (beim Eingang Starkenburggasse) zu finden.
Die lateinische Inschrift bezieht sich vermutlich auf eine nicht mehr vorhandene Sonnenuhr. Es wird der sterbliche Mensch angesprochen und daran erinnert, dass der (Erden-)Tag die Mühsal seines irdischen Lebens nicht von ihm nehmen kann.
Unausgesprochen – aber für Inschriften an Sonnenuhren fast selbstverständlich – bleibt dabei der – in Form eines Rätsels gekleidete - Hinweis auf das ewige Leben im Himmel. Die Mühsal bei der Auflösung des Rätsels symbolisiert also die Mühsal des Erdenlebens überhaupt.

The “Lateinstein” - a rock with an inscription in Latin - is located on the border of the former Scottish court, a Freihof - a fortified place whose inhabitants were privileged through not having to pay taxes or other charges, which was first mentioned in records in 1322. It was demolished in the years 1961/62. A mosaic "illustration of the old Scots Court," by Erwin Lang (1963) can be found close to the cache on the wall of the residential complex now on-site (at the entrance Starkenburggasse)
The Latin inscription presumably refers to a no longer present sundial. It is addressed to the mortal man and remembers that the (earth) day cannot take the hardships of his earthly life from him.
The reference to eternal life in heaven is dressed in the form of a riddle and remains unsaid - but it is almost self-evident for inscriptions on sundials. The hardships in the resolution of the puzzle symbolizes the hardships of life on earth in general.
