Geocache Description:

A log only cache hidden in a Central Park "cul-du-sac" and near a most unique work of art. You will need a tool to retrieve the log from the container.

Sit on the benches and watch as the people come walking up the path to this triangle. Expecting that they have entered the main body of Central Park- most that enter here will quickly realize their mistake and leave before ever seeing the life-sized bronze sculpture placed here. I, too, discovered this spot by accident, but happily I strayed long enough to discover this unique sculpture (for the parks of New York City, that is) entitlted THORVALDSEN. Can you guess why it deserves this distinction? Think about it- extra bonus points if you can figure it out.

This is a self-portrait by the Danish artist Albert Bertel Thorveldsen (1770-1822). It was dedicated on November 18, 1894 and originally stood much further south in the park (just north of 59th St. between 6 and 7th Aves), but in 1940 it was repositioned to this triangle. I have heard rumors that soon this triangle will be refigured as a playground and where will Thorvaldsen go next? The Bronx maybe.

There is only one way to get to and from the area without risking life and limb, so no "bushwhacking" to the cache. There are usually people about, hanging on the benches or walking their dogs and of course the mis-directed.

There are not so many places to hide a cache here, really; benches, a couple of lamp-posts, and a couple of trees. If you have a seat and think about it for a minute, I feel sure that it will come to you.

please put this one back just as you found it. And bring tweezers.
