Dieser Cache wurde vom offiziellen Groundspeak Block zum "Cache der Woche" im September 2012 gewählt und ein zweites Mal im Oktober 2014 !!!
Höhlenentstehung:
Die Eisriesenwelthöhle ist ein Höhlenlabyrinth von über 40 Kilometern Gesamtganglänge. Die Entstehung erfolgte wie bei allen Höhlen über einen sehr langen Zeitraum. Die ersten Spalten und Klüfte im Kalkfelsen entstanden bereits im Zuge der Gebirgshebungen vor ca. 100 Mio. Jahren und wurde durch chemische Auflösungsvorgänge und Wassererosion über Jahrtausende hinweg vergrößert und ausgeformt. Die Höhlen in den Alpen sind auch heute noch in einem Entwicklungsprozess, wenngleich sich viele Höhlensysteme - auch große Teile der Eisriesenwelt – durch Austrocknung nicht mehr bedeutend weiterentwickeln.
Eis in der Höhle:
Es gibt verschiedene Systeme, die Höhleneis verursachen. Die Eisriesenwelt ist eine dynamische Eishöhle. Das bedeutet, dass die Höhlengänge und Klüfte eine Verbindung von tiefer gelegenen Eingängen zu höher gelegenen Öffnungen bilden, die einen Luftzug ermöglichen. Je nach Außentemperatur befindet sich im Gebirgsinneren eine entweder kühlere oder wärmere Temperatur, die aufgrund des jeweils anderen spezifischen Gewichtes einen Luftzug von oben nach unten oder umgekehrt verursacht. Das führt dazu, dass im Winter, wenn die Luft im Berg wärmer ist als außerhalb, kalte Luft in den Berg einströmt und den unteren Teil der Höhle auf unter 0°C abkühlt. Wenn nun im Frühjahr Schmelzwasser durch die Felsritzen einsickert und in den unterkühlten Bereich der Höhle kommt, gefriert es und bildet die großartigen Eisgebilde im Bergesinneren.
Vorbereitung auf den Besuch:
Empfehlenswert sind feste Schuhe und warme Kleidung. Die Temperatur liegt auch im Sommer meist unter null Grad. Am Höhleneingang werden die Besucher mit Grubenlampen ausgerüstet. Im Inneren sorgt Magnesiumlicht für eine effektvolle Beleuchtung der eisigen Skulpturen. Die Höhle selbst steht im übrigen unter Denkmalschutz und darf nur mit autorisierten Führern betreten werden.
Körperliche Anforderungen:
Während des Besuches der Höhle sind insgesamt 134 Höhenmeter zu überwinden. Das entspricht etwa dem Fußmarsch durch das Treppenhaus eines großen Hochhauses. Auch hier liegt es in der Eigenverantwortung jedes Besuchers, ob er sich die damit verbundene Anstrengung zutraut. Zweifellos entschädigt jedoch die Schönheit der Eisfiguren und die beeindruckende Dimension der Höhle für jede Anstrengung! Das Führungstempo wird auf die jeweilige Besucherstruktur abgestimmt. Dennoch wird stark gehbehinderten oder Herz-Kreislauf-erkrankten Personen von einem Höhlenbesuch abgeraten.
Kinder:
Es liegt in der Verantwortung der Eltern, ob sie ihren Kindern den für sie relativ langen Marsch durch die kalte Höhle zutrauen oder nicht. Die Erfahrung hat gezeigt, dass Kleinkinder bis zum Alter von 3-4 Jahren oftmals überfordert sind. In jedem Fall sollte auf ausreichend warme Bekleidung geachtet werden. Mütze und Handschuhe bitte nicht vergessen.
Hunde:
Natürlich steht die Eisriesenwelt auch Tieren offen. Doch wirklich empfehlenswert ist für sie ein Besuch wegen der vielen Treppen in der Höhle nicht.

Cave formation:
The Eisriesenwelt is a labyrinth of caves with a total length of over 40 km. As is the case with all caves, their formation spans a long period of time. The first cracks and crevices in the limestone appeared during the elevation of the mountains approx. 100 million years ago and over the course of thousands of years became more developed and extended as a result of chemical reactions and water erosion. Caves in the alps are still developing, although in many cases the process of drying out has limited their development.
Ice in the caves:
There are various ways in which cave ice can form. The Eisriesenwelt is a dynamic cave, meaning that the corridors and the crevices connect lower lying entrances to higher openings hence making it possible for draughts of air to circulate. Depending upon the outside temperature, it is either warmer or cooler inside the mountain and this causes the air to circulate upwards or downwards. In winter, when the air inside the mountain is warmer than outside, cold air streams into the mountain and reduces the temperature of the lower areas of the caves to below freezing point. In spring the meltwater seeps through the cracks in the rock and when it reaches the colder lower areas of the caves it freezes and turns slowly into the wonderful ice formations visible inside the caves.
Preparations for your visit:
Heavy shoes and warm clothing are recommended. Even in summer the temperature is usually below freezing. Lamps are handed out at the entrance to the cave, and during the tour additional magnesium lighting highlights the ice sculptures to great effect. The cave itself is a national monument and may only be entered by authorised guides.
Health and Fitness:
Visitors have to climb 134 metres, which is equivalent to climbing the stairs in a high block of flats. Each individual must decide for himself whether he is physically capable or not. The beauty and breathtaking dimensions of the cave provide plenty of reward for the effort! Although the speed of the guided tour is tailored to the group, we advise those with serious walking difficulties or heart circulation problems not to visit the caves.
Children:
Parents must decide themselves whether the relatively long walk and cold temperatures are suitable for young children. Experience has taught us that it is not suitable for many children up to the age of 3-4. If children accompany the group, they should be wearing warm clothing, as well as gloves and a hat.
Dogs:
The Eisriesenwelt is open to animals but this is not recommended due to the large number of steps.
