Geocache Description:

The Greenside Mine in Glenridding produced lead from the late 1600s until it was closed in 1962. It was an innovator in many mining techniques, one being the generation of electricity. On the path up from the village along Glenridding Beck that eventually leads up to Helvellyn there is sited a small hydo-electric generation station. All that is left is a concrete base and a line of posts marked on the map as an 'Old Pipe Line (not path)'. The mine owners built the station together with a series of leats that brought water from Kepple Cove round the northern base of Catstye Cam and the western flank of Birkhouse Moor. These leats are in evidence on the OS 1:25K map.

To get to the cache walk up the Greenside Road from Glenridding (plenty of parking) to the site of the former Greenside Mine. From there cross Glenridding Beck via a small bridge and take the path to Red Tarn.
