Geocache Description:

A nice level walk into one of Surrey's secret managed butterfly reserves. It should take no more than 45mins but why not enjoy the walk and explore the hundreds of acres of Chiddingfold Forest.

There is parking of one or two cars at the entrance of the lane to the wood

Oaken Wood is a small area ( 8.8ha.) of oak woodland with birch understorey and, to the west, an area of damp grassland with planted aspen and broom/birch scrub. It lies to the west of the Dunsfold-Plaistow road SW of Cranleigh in SW Surrey and just north of the Sussex border. It is part of the much larger Chiddingfold Forest. The forest's conservation importance has been recognised and there are twenty areas within the complex which have SSSI (Sites of Special Scientific Interest) designation. Oaken Wood is in one of these SSSI.

Peter Beale (PB), a Forestry Commission employee noted back in 1983 the wealth of wildlife, especially nightingales and butterflies, in this part of the complex. In 1986 Contractors started to clear the Oaken Wood site, with intention of restocking with a Conifer crop. Peter alerted his manager to potential loss. Clearance was then halted and Oaken Wood was designated as Conservation Site.
Oaken Wood is home to the now very rare Pearl-bordered Fritillary and the Wood White butterflies and is in fact the only place in surrey were the Pearl-bordered Fritillary can be found.

The best time of year to visit this site is in the months of May to August, when you may be able to spot these rarities together with many other moths and butterflies.
Care should be taken when you make your visit due to rarity of this species, please take care not to litter and stay on the demarked paths.

Our Cache is a 2 1/2ltr box and has been restocked (Dec2010) with new goodies for your kids. No need to leave anything...
The co-coordinates are for a sign that you must find, on the sign are the answers to the follow questions.

0.A= the number of moths divided by 2
0.B= the number of butterflies times 7 plus 10

The cache can be found at the co-coordinates for the sign, N +.A and W +.B
Ie:- N01 05.695+A W000 35.010+B

Good luck I hope you enjoy our first cache.
