CZ: Kuks je jiste vsem zname a nadherne misto a popsany o
nem byly stohy ruznych pruvodcu - ovsem z hlediska geocachingu ma
ponekud handicap. Cache tam je (a uz pekne dlouho), ale jeji odlov
neni jednoduchy, pro sber indicii se musi clovek vydat navstivit
dalsi stavby hrabete Sporka v Polabi a rozhodne to neni cache na
kratky nedelni vylet.
S jeho historii je svazan krasny pripad slavy a upadku, ktery se
odehral dlouho pred nasimi casy a ktery mne zaujal, protoze jsem o
nem az donedavna vubec nevedel. Ale jelikoz je o mne znamo, jaky
jsem dobrak, tak se s vami podelim. 
Historie lazni a jejich zridelni zakladna
Socharska dila u Kuksu jsou na seznamu nejohrozenejsich svetovych
pamatek. Tento barokni komplex lecebnych zarizeni byl promyslenou
investici. Hrabe F.A.Spork ho zacal budovat v roce 1692 podle
projektu G. B. Alliprandiho v malebnem labskem udoli, ktere se
nehodilo pro zemedelstvi, protoze bylo prilis zamokrene. Na levem
brehu Labe byla postavena lazenska budova a v udoli Labe byly
zrizeny upravene stezky kolem zachycenych lecivych pramenu. Lazne
byly uvedeny do provozu jiz v roce 1695 a rychle ziskaly klientelu.
V roce 1702 bylo v Kuksu postaveno divadlo a v dalsich letech byly
lazenske cesty, vyzdobene plastikami Matyase Brauna, prodlouzeny az
k Novemu lesu u Zirce, kde vznikl socharsky komplex Betlem.
V roce 1707 byl na navrsi na pravem brehu Labe postaven naproti
lazenske budove klaster Milosrdnych bratri se spitalem a pred nim
kostel Nejsvetejsi Trojice s rozsahlou kryptou pro zemrele. Spital
mel velikou dobre vybavenou lekarnu a zasobovaly ho vodou tri
studny vytesane do piskovce. Nejmelci z nich je hluboka 17 m a mela
by dost vody asi tak pro moderni dvojdomek, takze pri tehdejsich
malych narocich mohla uspokojit bezne potreby asi sedmdesati lidi.
Na uklid spitalu a na zalevani rozlehle zahrady ale stacit nemohla
a jeji prohlubovani bylo ukonceno, kdyz se v ni pritok ani s
rostouci hloubkou nezvysoval. Zato hloubeni dalsich dvou studni,
hlubokych 21 a 22 m, bylo zastaveno az kdyz se nepodarilo zvladnout
neustale se zvysujici pritok proste kridove vody.
Zridelni zakladna lazni byla uz od pocatku problematicka, protoze
zachycene „lecive prameny“ v udoli Labe jimaly jen
prostou melkou podzemni vodu a z hlavnich pramenu u lazenske budovy
dokonce vytekala zdravotne podezrela voda, ktera naprsela a vsakla
do zeme primo v mestecku Kuks. Hrabe Spork se sice asi pokousel
nalezt pro sve lazne skutecnou mineralni vodu, ale bez uspechu. Bez
mineralniho zridla nemohl Kuks v narustajici konkurenci
zapadoceskych lazni obstat a tak uz za dva roky po smrti hrabete
Sporka dovrsila upadek lazni velka povoden, ktera v roce 1740
znicila zachycene prameny v udoli Labe. Pro maly zajem klientu uz
nebyly nikdy obnoveny a lazne upadly v zapomenuti. Tam, kde kdysi
vedly upravene lazenske cesty kolem lecivych pramenu a vytesanych
kamennych plastik, je dnes v sirokem okoli Kuksu jenom neschudny
luzni les a rozlehla mokra luka lezici ladem.

K samotnemu odlovu: Teren byl ohodnocen dvojkou, coz plati v
pripade sucha nebo mrazu. Vemte si sebou dobre blatoslapky, at
potom nenadavate autorovi, ze vas nevaroval.

EN: Kuks is a quite well-know tourist destination and a
beautiful place. Tons of various guides describe the area –
but from the geocaching point of view it has a bit of handicap. A
cache is placed there (and has been for quite long) but in order to
find it you have to visit other objects built by Earl Spork near
Lysa nad Labem and for sure it is not a short Sunday trip.
History of Kuks is tied with a nice example of fame and decay that
happened long before our times and it got my attention mainly
because I had no clue about it until recently. Since everybody
knows what a good guy I am, I will share the story with you.
History of the spa and its spring base
The statues in Kuks are currently on the list of most threatened
cultural monuments. But this baroque complex of health curing
facilities was a well-considered investment. Earl F. A. Spork
started to build it in 1692 according to the project by G. B.
Alliprandi in picturesque valley by the Elbe river which was not
very suitable for agriculture as it was too swamped. On the left
bank of Elbe, he built a spa facility and in the valley formed
trails around the healing springs. The spa was launched in 1695 (no
messing around, huh?) and quickly got its clientele. In 1702 there
was a theater built in Kuks and followed by extending new spa
trails decorated with statues by Matyas Braun to nearby Zirec where
the “Bethlehem” complex was founded.
On a hill on the right bank of Elbe, there was a new monastery with
hospital built in 1707 and in front of it a new church of the Holy
Trinity and large crypt for the dead. Hospital apothecary was well
equipped and supplied with water from three wells dug in the
sandstone. The shallowest of them was 17 meters deep and had enough
water for about 70 people at those times (current consumption for a
modern double house).
The spring base was a bit problematic from the beginning because
the found “healing springs” in the Elbe valley
collected only regular underground water and the main springs near
the spa building had water that was a bit suspicious from the
medical view, as it was rainwater collected in the area. Earl Spork
tried to find real spring water for his spa but with no success.
Without a real springs Kuks could no longer cope with the
increasing competition from spas in the west Bohemia and two years
after earl Spork’s death was its spa decay crowned by a big
flooding that destroyed all collected water springs in the Elbe
valley in 1740. For low interest from potential clients, Kuks spa
was never renewed and soon forgotten. Where once spa trails around
the springs and famous statues were, there are nowadays only
impassable riverine forests and spacious swamped grasslands with no
use.

Hint for hunting: Terrain is ranked 2, which applies only to
dry or frozen surface. Take good mud-stodge shoes so you
don’t have to curse the cache owner that he has not warned
you.
