Geocache Description:

When you look up to Flagstaff from many parts of Dunedin you can’t help but notice the Twins. They are a group of rocks that sit to the east of the summit.
I placed this cache here because Flagstaff is a place well worth visiting with it great views and variety of walks.

These rocks have stood in silent witness to many significant events in Dunedin’s history, from the arrival of the first settlers to the never-ending expansion of the suburbs.

In the 1840’s they would have seen the slow but certain passage of the Bullock Wagons as they climb up through Wakari, and over Flagstaff as they made there way north on Johnny Jones Bullock Track.

The colourful hermit Ben Rudd lived first of all below these rocks and then later in the 1920s over behind them and as Flagstaff became more popular with trampers they would wander on to his property and be warned off by the “stocky, bearded little man with the shot-gun”.
The Otago Mountaineering and Tramping Club now owns his property.

Just a few months ago I pointed out the rocks to a school group as we walked over the Pineapple Track, telling them when they look up at Flagstaff and see the rocks they will know where they were walking.

The cache it’s self is a black-painted 400mL snaplock, visible from 0 Metres.

There is a rough route from the Pineapple track. W/P S45 49.898 E170 28.216
The route is quite rough in places, a bit overgrown with broom probably a 3.5 for a short distance.
