Geocache Description:

Once upon a time there were three Billy Goats called Gruff…

This cache is located along the Braamfontein spruit which not only serves as a greenbelt in the suburbs, but also as a significant conduit for rainwater runoff. Unfortunately the nature of many residential developments increases the volume and velocity of stormwater entering the spruit. This results in significant erosion and undercutting of the embankment.

Fortunately help is at hand – the JRA (Johannesburg Roads Agency) has undertaken a significant project to rehabilitate the embankment protection of the Braamfontein spruit drainage system. Much of the work already completed is evident from the cache site, including a number of dams designed to reduce the velocity of water flowing through this area.

Historically, the flash-floods typical of highveld thunderstorms have resulted in loss of life as pedestrians have attempted to cross the fast-flowing water with fatal results. A number of pedestrian bridges have been built to allow safe crossing of the river during rainy periods. The increased accessibility provided by the pedestrian bridge makes the cache location a very popular path for dog-walking, mountain biking and general foot-traffic. In the vicinity there is a nursery and occasionally horses can be seen.

Rumours tell of the treasure that the troll accumulated from his victims. The stories go on to tell about the ancient magic that keeps the treasure hidden. Can you find the troll's secret treasure stash...?

The cache container is not visible and it’s location provides some cover from onlookers, however extreme caution should be taken when retrieving the cache since there are a number of vantage points for muggles to observe your activities. Please ensure that the cache is replaced 'as far as it can go' to ensure that it's not visible. Make sure that you employ the 'ancient magic' to secure the cache in it's hiding place!
