Geocache Description:

A short tour of the Vance Birthplace will get you the coordinates to the cache, located less than two miles away.

Zebulon Baird Vance (May 13, 1830 – April 14, 1894) was a Confederate military officer in the American Civil War, twice Governor of North Carolina, and U.S. Senator. A prodigious writer, Vance became one of the most influential southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods. And to think it all started in Buncombe County, near present-day Weaverville.

The listed coordinates are NOT for the cache, but will bring you to the entrance of this North Carolina Historic Site. Hours of operation are 10am to 4pm Tuesday-Saturday. There is no admission fee. The coordinates to the physical cache are:

N 35° 41. AB 6
W 82° 31. CD 5

A = the number of exterior windows on the main/largest house [Glass windows or windows with hinged shutters only]
B = the total number of historic buildings MINUS the number of letters in the longest word in the last line of the poem written by Zeb’s brother [See signs near back door of park HQ]
C = the number of exterior doors on the main/largest house MINUS the total number of chimneys visible on all of the historic structures
D = the number of cannonballs in the tanning shed

CHECKSUM: A + B + C + D = 8

Once the coordinates are calculated and you have relocated your vehicle you will be looking for a small square plastic container with a purple lid. If coming from the hint item the cache is BEFORE the barbed wire. Enjoy your visit to the Vance Birthplace!
