Gecko Dad is typically in the back country for his caching adventures. Some days, though, conditions are favorable for a local workout, such as on a blustery late fall day following a cleansing weekend rainstorm. This is the first of a two-stage cross-country hike and climb to Peak 1820, perhaps the finest vantage point in eastern Poway.
Parking is available adjacent to the Garden Trail trailhead at N 32 57.680, W 116 59.806. One way distance is under a mile but you will climb about 700 feet to reach the cache.
Step 1 is a regular cache that may be logged as a standalone find. As a bonus, the logbook includes coordinates for a second cache, Gecko Stairmaster - Step 2, that is placed near the summit of Peak 1820. This second cache is reachable via a cross country route from Step 1 that involves “only” 500 feet of additional elevation gain. The views from both sites are spectacular.
The cache is an uncamouflaged square Lock & Lock. Initial contents include a Sterling silver gecko charm, a selection of small lizards, a handmade bead gecko, a yellow/orange/red handmade bead gecko, a new “The Dog” toy, a bobble head turtle, a hand exerciser, and 911 Turbo Geocoin.

As you are signing the logbook, please remember to make note of the coordinates that will lead you to Step 2. They are written inside the front cover and on the outside of the back cover.

Approximately two thirds of this hike is off trail. Be on the lookout for snakes, especially in the spring and summer months. Please make sure you bring ample water, too.
