Geocache Description:

The third in the series of Melbourne houses, this one is decidedly humble!

"Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home."

- John Howard Payne (1822)
The house that is the subject of the third in the Be It Ever so Humble series has only two rooms, and is only nine feet wide!

Located in inner Melbourne, this structure was typical of workers cottages from the 19th century. While the few well-off members of society lived in beautiful mansions, many people lived like this - a very small house, on a very small block of land. The many alleyways that still exist at the back of inner city houses were in fact streets which gave access to hundreds of such small dwellings. Many existing houses are actually built on the sites of what were two dwellings, which in many cases show up on current land titles.

This particular house is rather, although not totally, unique, because of its size. One of a small row which were built in the mid 1870's, they were in Islington St Collingwood for many years. This last remaining example was occupied until 1977, and is believed to be the smallest house in Victoria.

Housing has come a long way since then!
