Proceed to the posted coordinates
when it is dark out and bring a good light. Hold your light at your
own eye level (or use a headlamp) and look around for a reflection
in the trees somewhere. Follow the trail of these reflectors to the
cache site. At the cache site, you will find three reflectors on
the same tree. The cache will be within 3 meters of those
reflectors.
The reflectors are
“firetacks”. They are
“retro-reflective”. This means the best reflection is seen when the
light source is held near your own eyes. A good narrow beam light
works the best and the darker it is out, the easier they are to
see. This is what they look like close up.
Most times you should be able to
see the next reflector by the time that you pass the last one.
Sometimes, however, you may need to proceed a short ways past it to
spot the next one. Be careful not to walk too far or to pass
intersections as I have put many twists and turns in the path to
add some challenge. If you can’t see any more reflectors in front
of you, backtrack and look around more carefully. If you encounter
any really tough spots, please let me know by email the coordinates
of the difficult spot and I’ll review that area to make sure none
of the reflectors have gone missing.
Please be careful in the winter as
the trails can be icy. Traction aids on your shoes can be very
helpful.
Make sure you have a spare light
and batteries for both the lights and your GPS. Without a GPS, it
will be quite difficult to find your way back to the car unless you
know this area well.
I hope you have a good time. Please
provide feedback so that I can make it an enjoyable cache for
all.
