How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

My first attempt at a multi-thing, with my usual efforts to make it attractive to everyone.

The only significance of the background picture is that it was my prep school.

The coordinates above are for a handy parking spot, which is a logical place to start and finish.

GEOCACHING ON NATIONAL TRUST PROPERTY IS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Also, please note that the National Trust is caring for the specialist habitats and landscape you enjoy on this and other caches on NT property, which is one of the reasons we are glad to be members.

Please Sir, what do I have to do?

The cache involves a walk of about an hour and a half finding 4 micros, which contain questions you have to answer for the coordinates of the final location. The GPS signal is not wonderful in places, but the clues should get you there.

The questions are all mathematical, so if you hate maths, take your GCSE expert with you, or have them as a PAF! The questions aren't tricky and can all be solved in the field, you just need to take a pen and paper, or take a calculator. However, I will warn you that I believe in proper old English units, not these stupid new continental things - see example below.

Battleships - sort of!

This grid will be used throughout the cache to identify the final coordinates. Each question will have an answer, e.g. 43. This will mean row 4 of the grid, number 3 in the row – this would give the answer 2 (I'm counting rows from the top). Blanks do not count in this scheme, so if the answer to a question were 81, the grid would give row 8, number 1 = 9.

A sample question

Add together a tanner, 3 bob and half a crown – how many old pence is that? Answer = ZZ – interpret via grid gives B

The final cache location is

N 51 16.(D-G)(E+G-B-H)(B+A-C)

W 00 17.(C-H)(B+D-F-G-H)(A-B)

There is a prize in the final location, which is a set of clues for some of our other caches - please don't remove it!

The hint gives away my age, and the sort of music I was in to when I left school and went to University!!

You can check your answers for the final location on Geochecker.com.
