How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

This multi-cache path (offset cache with 5 stages) is developed in Venice. It follows a small trace of drinking water in the hearth of salt water.

ESSENTIAL NOTE: to solve the riddles, you have to read the special Guide of Venice developed by Nozio Travel Network, free download and printing for personal use (http://www.travelplan.it/pdf/venice_guide.pdf). I suggest you print a copy and take it with you during the search.

ADDITIONAL NOTE: in Venice, more than in other cities, it’s very easy to loss the signal during the search of the cache. To help the geocacher, I have prepared a map of the area you have to cross, normally used for Orienteering. Not a normal map, but a special version, accurate and detailed but without the names of the road or any other indications. By courtesy of Stefano Cortella, normally used in the International Orienteering Meeting of Venice (http://www.amemo.it/old/varie/Geocaching/VeniceWaters.jpg). Print it and use only if you are loosing the signal of the satellites.

And now, start the search.
You can easily reach Piazzale Roma, the gate of Venice when you arrive with car or bus. There are a lot of parking near this place, but if you arrive with the car, it’s better for you to leave it in Mestre and after take a bus. The coordinates of the starting point are: N 45° 26,227’ E 012° 19,154’. In this place you’ll find the older fountain of our path. The value of the number (X), useful for the next stage, is [1] if the fountain base is square, [2] if it’s round, [3]if rectangular.

1st stage: see the waypoint 1.
To reach the second stage, you have to discover the number (Y) of text characters written in the first row of the inscription you see at the basement of the fountain.

2nd stage: see the waypoint 2.
To reach the third stage, you have to discover the number (Z) of “coats of arms” with the Venice Lion head fused around the fountain.

3rd stage: see the waypoint 3.
To reach the fourth stage, you have to discover the number (W) of big bolts that strongly anchors the fountain to the pavement.

4th stage: see the waypoint 4.
To reach the fifth and final stage, you have to discover the number (K) of symbols representing flowers placed on each side of the top of the fountain.

5th and final stage: see the waypoint 5.
You’ll arrive to a closed narrow road (“calle”): go to the end, and search on the left, under a little “tree”.

Abot this cache
This cache was developed in Italy during the school project COMENIUS GOES GEOCACHING. This is the title of an europeanwide project run by four schools situated in Germany, Italy, Scotland and Spain.:
  • Willy Brandt-Gesamtschule Kerpen (Germany)
  • Istituto tecnico industriale statale Carlo Zuccante (Italy)
  • IES de Fuentesaúco (Spain)
  • Inverness Royal Academy (Scotland)
The project deals of course with geocaching. It is supported by the EU and getting funds out of the SOCRATES/COMENIUS programme. The project started in 2006 and runs until summer 2009. The basic idea is to link international schools and creating chances for pupils all over Europe to meet and getting the chance to practise different languages, at first hand English! There were several meetings of the project partners and some caches were created! The pupils learned about different things and habits of the involved partners and how to use basic skills in language and the usage of geocaching.
