Geocache Description:

This cache is a beautiful Hudson River park in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. with a view of a future historically significant railroad bridge walkway/park.

This cache is located at Longview Park in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This is a unique and scenic recreational park along the banks of the Hudson River and accessed through the main entrance of the Marist College campus. It was opened to the public in 2006. The park which houses two historic boathouses, was the site of the intercollegiate Rowing Association Regatta, the national championship of rowing from 1895-1949. The site, home of the champion Marist men's and women's crew teams, still hosts intercollegiate and interscholastic crew meets. The park provides visitors with scenic vistas of the historic Hudson River Valley that has inspired presidents, painters and poets. Take a leisurely stroll down the river walk or just relax and enjoy the view from the gazebo.

From the park is a spectacular view of the Poughkeepsie-Highland Railroad Bridge. A fire in 1974 closed the bridge which is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. Through the hard work of Walkway Over the Hudson (www.walkway.org), a not for profit corporation, the bridge has been transformed into a state park of national and regional significance. It opened to the public on October 3,2009 and is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. It has been designated a national historic trail and is a place to walk, sit, ride bicycles, enjoy the river view and appreciate the wonder of an engineering feat unprecedented in it's time with a beauty unsurpassed in ours.

The park is reached by entering the main entrance of Marist College on Route 9 at Fulton Street. Slowly drive through the campus and at the bottom of the hill turn right and proceed under the railroad tunnel. Park in the lot immediately after exiting the tunnel. Enjoy the river walk in the direction of the boathouses.
