Geocache Description:

A rappelling/belaying mini-event at Whitestone Cliff, Plymouth CT that will be held on a regular basis - yearly or semi-yearly, depending on response. We'll meet at the trailhead (coordinates above) promptly at 9:00 AM

IMPORTANT: See Parking Notes

NEW DATE: Saturday, June 1, 2013

Learn how to rappel and belay in a safe, controlled environment. Our focus will be on using climbing equipment to retrieve those difficult 5 star terrain caches.
  • To maintain a safe instructor/student ratio, participants will be limited to the first 20 sign-ups who have not participated in the past.Others are welcome to attend and will be accommodated as time allows. Our intent is to make the instruction available to all but participation for people who haven't done this before. If you've been a past participant, great! You're welcome to come, hang out, help out, take pix, laugh, heckle, shout encouragement, ask questions, and use the climbing gear as available. But, let's give first chance on using equipment to newbies.
  • There's no age limit. Well-behaved children are welcome but parents are responsible for watching them and caring for their safety. Kids can rappel with parental permission and at instructor's discretion.
  • There is no fee for this event.
  • Since this is a recurring event and you "attend" an event instead of "finding" it, you can log an "attended" for each time you attend different days. Or post a note, your choice.
  • You don't have to rappel or climb (although we hope you will) in order to log attending the event.
  • In case of adverse weather the event will be rescheduled.
  • As the date gets closer check back here for updates and announcements

EVENT OVERVIEW: Outdoor classroom instruction will cover safety, climbing equipment, rappelling technique and belaying technique. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions. Stay just for the morning or stay all day!

Field activities will include tying in, belaying and rappelling (50-60'). As time allows, you'll be able to rappel again and again, try out several different rappelling methods In the afternoon, we'll set a top rope and you can climb back up as many times as you'd like.

WHAT TO BRING: Cold drinks, lunch, insect repellent and sunblock. Wear loose fitting clothing appropriate for rock climbing and rock climbing shoes, sneakers or boots with proper soles. No sandals or open-toed shoes. It's a good idea to remove jewelry - especially rings and watches. Head protection is recommended - but not required - and could be a climbing helmet, kayaking helmet or bicycle helmet. If you have personal climbing gear, feel free to bring it along. All other necessary climbing gear will be provided.

SAFETY: While safety is our main concern, accidents DO happen. Many of us know one another only by our caching names. What if there was an accident and you were unconscious? Who would we call? Because of this, we strongly urge you to download and fill out this Emergency Contact Form and Wallet Card. Keep the wallet card on your person.

PARKING: Parking is limited at the trailhead meeting place. There is room for only about 10 cars. We strongly urge you to please make arrangements to carpool. Additional parking is at N41°36.749 W73°02.865 and either walk or carpool the 0.4 miles to the trailhead

CAMPING: While there is no camping allowed at the event site, there are three campgrounds within 5-10 minutes of Whitestone Cliff. One is a state campground and two are private.
