O Farol-Museu de Santa Marta: para ver e ser visto em Cascais

O Farol-Museu de Santa Marta nasceu a partir do forte e farol com o mesmo nome, fruto de uma parceria entre a Câmara Municipal de Cascais e o Estado Maior da Armada Portuguesa. Inédito no país, o Farol-Museu oferece um espaço expositivo criado nas antigas residências dos faroleiros e que se divide em três pólos: dois núcleos expositivos e um auditório. O visitante tem ainda acesso às amplas plataformas com vista para o mar e a espaços de recepção, centro de documentação e cafetaria.
As obras de adaptação às novas funções tiveram início em 2006, promovendo a requalificação e conversão do Forte e Farol de Santa Marta em espaço de cultura e lazer, embora mantendo as suas funções de sinalização costeira, sob a direcção da Marinha, através da Direcção de Faróis.

Construído na década de 50 do séc. XVII, o Forte de Santa Marta era o primeiro ponto fortificado destinado a barrar o acesso à vila. Mas a posição estratégica que tinha para fins militares também o tinha para a navegação, e em 1868 passa a ser também farol após a construção de uma pequena torre, servindo de marca para de dia e recebendo uma luz vermelha para direcção à noite.
Em 1949 foi instalado um sinal sonoro. E em 1980 e 1981 procedeu-se aos trabalhos de automatização dispensando apartir de então, a presença do faroleiro. No ano de 2000, a Marinha e a Câmara de Cascais decidiram criar um núcleo museológico dedicado aos faróis, acrescentando assim mais um pólo de atracção turística na localidade de Cascais e, no caso da Marinha, um ponto de divulgação numa área de responsabilidade que, cada vez mais, desperta e cativa a atenção das populações, nomeadamente das zonas ribeirinhas...

Inverno (01 Outubro a 30 Abril) - Terça a Domingo, das 10 às 18 horas

Saint Marta's Lighthouse-museum: to see and be seen in Cascais

The Saint Marta's lighthouse-museum was born from the fortress and lighthouse with the same name, a partnership between the Cascais town hall and the Portuguese Navy. Unique in the country, the lighthouse museum offers an exibition space built in the former residences of the lighthouse men with 2 exibition roons, an auditorium, wide see views, reception, documentation center and snack-bar.
The constructions for adaption to museum began in 2006, giving it new purposes while keeping it's coast signalization purpose, under the management of the Navy.

Built in the second half of the 18th century, Saint Marta's Fortress was the 1st fortified point created to prevent attacks to the town. But the strategical position it had for militar porpose, also had for navigation and in 1868 it begans to be a lighthouse, after a small tower was built, to be used as a mark by day and recieving a red light for direction at night.
In 1949 a sound signal was instaled. And in 1980 and 1981 it was automated and since then it has worked without the presence of a lighthouse keeper.
In 2000 the Navy and the Cascais Town Hall decided to create a museum center devoted to lighthouses, giving the town another turist atraction and to the portuguese navy, the opportunity to spread information on a theme that insterests more and more people, specialy from the coast lines...

Summer (1st May to 30th September) – Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 7pm
Winter (1st October to 30th April) - Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 6pm

Entrance in the museum center is free.
