The Secret Staveley Series was designed as a circular walk starting and finishing in Staveley village.
Care should be taken as path can be slippery.
We think the best order is to follow the caches numbered 1 to 5 but the walk can be done in either direction. It should take between 2 and 3 hours depending on how quickly you walk and how long each cache takes to find. The route is on footpaths and minor roads with little traffic. We hope you enjoy your walk as much as we did planning it.
Parking is available near Barley Bridge in a small lay-by or in the village itself.
Stand on the bridge for a while and have a look at the River Kent. You can sometimes see dippers, wagtails and kingfishers in this area. At the right time of year you can see salmon trying to jump up the weir.
The weir was built to provide water power to the mills in the area. The original mill was a cotton mill, later becoming woollen and spinning mills. For over 100 years Kentmere Ltd have been making photographic paper and boxes in the mill nearest to the bridge. The last time water power was used at the mill was in 1971.
From Fishy Plaice continue to Stylish Style(2) GC173Q3 by taking the road following the east bank of the river downstream. After about 30 metres turn left following the lane between houses. A Public Footpath sign is on the wall of a white house. Once through the houses the path follows the wall, it is quite steep but well worth the climb. You will find a few wooden steps to get you over the wall. Look back and you can see Staveley village.
