The
Moorish’s Depth Dam
ou Barragem do Pego da Mina é uma
barragem romana, localizada na freguesia e concelho de Grândola,
distrito de Setúbal, e foi declarada Imóvel de interesse público
pelo Decreto 67/97 DR 301 de 31 de Dezembro de
1997.

municipality, district of Setúbal, and
was declared to be a Building of Public Interest by the Decree
67/97 DR301 of December the 31st 1997.
Esta barragem está situada no lugar das Represas, nas imediações
da Estrada Nacional 120 que liga Grândola a Santiago do Cacém,
entre Santa Margarida da Serra e Grândola. Construída na época da
ocupação romana do território português, foi apenas identificada já
durante o século XX, concluindo-se o seu processo de classificação
apenas em
1996.
This dam is located in
Represas, close to EN120 (that connects
Grândola to Santiago do
Cacém), between Santa Margarida
da Serra and
Grândola. It was built during the roman
occupation in the Portuguese territory but was only identified
during the XX Century, and its classification process ended in
1996.
A barragem é constituída por três muros, de secção rectangular,
com seis contrafortes, apresentando uma altura máxima de
aproximadamente 3 metros.
The
dam consists of three walls, of rectangular section, with six
buttresses, presenting a maximum height of about 3
metres.

The
Legend
Era uma noite de luar. Uma mulher conduzia uma vaca, e ao passar
junto da represa viu sobre esta uma Moura que se penteava com pente
de ouro.
It was a moonlit night.
A woman was driving her cow close to the dam, when she saw a
Moorish girl brushing her hair with a golden brush.
Disse-lhe a Moura:
- A Tua vaca vai ter dois bezerros iguais. Não uses o leite dela a
não ser para os alimentares e, quando forem adultos, vem
apresentar-mos.
The
Moorish told her:
-Your cow will give birth to two identical calves. Use its milk
only to feed them, and when they grow up bring them to
me.
Nasceram efectivamente dois bezerros idênticos, brancos, e a
mulher não deu outro destino ao leite da vaca que não fosse o
recomendado.
Two identical white
calves were born, and the woman used the cow's milk only to feed
them, as she was told.
Porém, um dia, perante o rogo de uma vizinha que necessitava
urgentemente de leite para acudir a um enfermo, a mulher cedeu-lhe
parte do que tinha na vasilha.
Until one day a
neighbour begged her to give her milk, which she urgently needed to
help a sick person, and the woman gave her a portion of the
milk.
Logo reconheceu o erro cometido e, irritada, derramou o resto do
leite da vasilha sobre um dos bezerros que, com grande espanto seu,
viu, de imediato, coberto de malhas.
She
immediately recognised her mistake and, furious, spread the rest of
the milk on one of the calves which, to her great surprise, was
immediately covered with spots.
Quando os animais se tornaram adultos, a mulher conduziu-os, de
noite, até ao local da represa.
When
the animals grew up, the women took them to the dam at
night.
Aí lhe apareceu a Moura que ordenou que os levasse para dentro
de água, ao que ofereceram resistência.
Apareceu uma canga sobre os bois, que começaram a puxar algo que
estava soterrado nas areias depositadas e que, ao emergir daquelas,
se revelou ser uma enorme trave de ouro reluzente.
There
the Moorish appeared and ordered her to take them into the water,
despite their resistance.
A yoke appeared over the oxen. They started pulling something that
was buried under the sands, and once emerged the woman
realised it was a huge shining gold beam.
Mas cedo se quebrou o encanto: O boi malhado cedeu e ajoelhou,
logo se afundando a trave e desaparecendo a Moura.
But
soon the charm was broken: The spotted ox gave in and kneeled down,
letting the beam sink and making the Moorish go
away.
Ouviu-se uma voz: - Arriba boi
bragado; tiravas a trave de ouro se não
te têm o leite roubado."
A
voice was then heard saying: - "Get up spotted ox; you’d get the
gold beam out if they hadn’t stolen your milk."*

Apesar de reduzido,
o património cultural é composto pelo Chafariz, construído em 1843,
os moinhos de vento e a Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Saúde, datada do
século XV, com talha de estilo nacional e com pintura maneirista no
interior.
Despite being somewhat short, the cultural patrimony consists of
the Fountain, built in 1843, the wind mills and the Our Lady of
Health’s Church built in the XV century, with national style
carving and mannerist painting inside.
Vale a pena dar um
passeio por ali. A barragem fica a cerca de 4.5
Km de Santa Margarida da
Serra.
The place is worth a good walk around. The dam is about 4.5km from
Santa Margarida da Serra.
Da aldeia partem também vários percursos pedestres sinalizados
para os aficionados neste tema.
From
the village start several marked footpaths, for those who like a
good hike.
