I like mystery caches. They add some challenge to what would be
an easy find and offer the opportunity to educate the cache hunter
about something. My idea of a mystery cache does not require
internet searching or some arcane knowledge from an old TV show -
just follow the instructions from the description and perhaps do a
little simple math.
I've finally managed to figure out one close to home that will
also teach you a little about Silver Lake - that community most of
the local people just drive through without really noticing
anything.
The final stage is a 35mm film can with just the log book. Bring
your own writing tool. It's on private property with the owner's
permission.
You have to visit four places all within a tenth of a mile of
your parking place. The cache coordinates listed are for a place
you can park along Silver Lake Boulevard. You don't have to park
right there, anywhere nearby is fine. Park ONLY on the east side of
the street.
The park where the boat house is located is labeled a "members
only" park. Don't worry, you're not here to take out a rowboat or
use anything else so nobody will bother you. You're there to look
for historical information you heard about in case somebody asks
(unlikely). It's not fenced in or anything and is pretty open
anyway. This is a park so daylight hours only!
To find the final cache you need to fill in the coordinates by
finding the answers to the following questions. Use the coordinates
listed in the Additional Waypoints below to find the places
in the questions.
The final location is at: N 41° 09.ABC W 81° 27.DEF - you fill
in the ABC/DEF letters from these questions:
A - At the playground, what animal do you see?
1 - Turtle
3 - Frog
6 - Swan
8 - Horse
B - At the boat house is a plaque where the Silver Lake Park
Dance Pavilion once stood. How many feet was the dance floor from
the shoreline?
C - From the historical marker: Judge William Wetmore built his
cabin overlooking the lake which was then part of:
1 - Portage County
4 - Stow
7 - Akron
9 - Cuyahoga Falls
D - From the historical marker: The Lodges bred and raised:
2 - Dairy cows
4 - Swans
7 - Bears
9 - Pigs
E - Near the historical marker: How many deciduous trees are
within 30 feet (don't count any across the street)?
F - About how high is the rock?
0 - 5 feet
4 - 30 centimeters
5 - 3 meters
6 - 2 feet
You can check your answers for this puzzle on
Geochecker.com. The final location is 0.15 miles from the
parking coordinates.
