I just received this note from a friend who is both a mountain
dulcimer player and a fellow geocacher:
Hi,
I’m just heading to the airport for a month long dulcimer tour
of
Pago Pago
. I’ve put together a new
puzzle cache, but I
didn’t have time to publish it. Would you mind doing it for
me?
First determine the musical
notes shown, then convert them to numbers by using the
following:
A = 0
B = 1 C# = 2 D = 3
E = 4 F# = 5
G = 6
He obviously coded part of the coordinates by using dulcimer
tablature, so I pulled out my old McSpadden dulcimer and quickly
figured out the musical notes. I then converted them to numbers
using his scheme and ran out to find the cache.
And……..nothing! There was no cache there!
I came home and pondered what I had done. It was then I had the
revelation! Like most dulcimer players, I use Mixolydian (DAd)
tuning – he prefers Reverse Ionian! Once I knew that, it was easy
for me (and might be for you) to solve the puzzle.
The coordinates listed above are for suggested parking. The cache
itself is an ammo box filled with various goodies. The FTF prize is
a CD by David Schnaufer, arguably the best mountain dulcimer player
in the world before his death last year at age 53.
Congratulations to 72CCT-ChE for being FTF on this cache!
