Geocache Description:

There can be few cities in the UK, or even the world, with as many musical links as Liverpool. It is acknowledged by the Guinness Book of Hit Singles as “The World Capital of Pop” for producing more number one hit singles per capita than any other city around the globe.

Its Wall of Fame in Mathew Street in the Cavern Quarter celebrates this achievement by featuring 54 Liverpool Number One chart hits between 1952 and 2002. The most famous era was probably the 1960’s with the Beatles and Gerry & the Pacemakers, but we must not forget other bands like OMD, Elvis Costello and the Attractions, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Christians, The Teardrop Explodes, The Zutons, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Lightening Seeds, Atomic Kitten and The Coral. There have been far more successful bands from Liverpool than solo artists, but they do range from Cilla Black and Ken Dodd through Melanie Chisholm to Ray Quinn of X Factor fame.

The above co-ordinates are in Mathew Street, Liverpool. The high buildings around here play havoc with the GPS so I’ll help you by telling you they are for the Bronze statue of John Lennon leaning against the wall close to the junction with North John Street.

To find the cache, you first need to find the links between the following pairs of bands or artists that have either managed to break into the charts, or performed at the city’s famous Cavern Club.

A : K-L
B : “Raving Texans Skiffle Group” and “Orpheus”
D.CE : “St James Infirmary” and “Butch”
F : “The Perishers ” and “The Big Sleep”
G : M+N
H : “The Plebs” and “The Peeps”
I : “Syd Lawrence Jazz Band” and “Don Rendell”
J : “Dada” and “The Jazz Couriers”
K : “Art Ellefson” and “The Dischords”
L : “Supertramp” and “Panama Jazz Band”
M : “The Thee” and “Rondo”
N : “Amon Din” and “The Siege Band”

The cache is at N 53 AB.CDE W 002 FG.HIJ which is short walk from John Lennon’s statue down Mathew Street. Please allow time to explore the Cavern Quarter as there are many statues, sculptures, unusual seats and other things to see, linked with music in the city.

As already stated, GPS signal around Mathew Street is at best ‘bad’ and worst ‘non-existent’, so to help, find three more musical links before heading off to the final cache.

PQRST : “Alex Revell Jazz band” and “Orphan”
U : “Only the Best” and “The Southside Stompers”
V : “Cathedral” and “Clean Blue Skies”

You will need to search near RQxU and STxV if you wish to succeed in finding the cache.

Having (hopefully) found the cache, continue to the end where Mathew Street meets Stanley Street. To the left you will see the bronze statue designed by Tommy Steele of Eleanor Rigby sat on a bench. Inside the statue he put a four leaf-clover for luck, a page from the Bible for spiritual health, a sonnet for lovers, an adventure book for excitement and a pair of football boots for action to boost the statue's mythical properties. Join the queue of tourists waiting to have your picture taken sat next to Eleanor!
