Geocache Description:

Please bear with me as this will be a first attempt at an event cache.

Been that this is a bit of a remote part of South Africa as far as caching is concerned and mostly because I get to do all the caches in the area alone. I have decided that to boost the fun in this area I will host this small event and with the help of the local newspapers possibly draw other non caching GPS users to the wonderful pastime of Geocaching. I have chosen the town of Utrecht as a central point for the event. Reason been that it is in a game reserve and they have plenty of camping space available. There is an entry fee for the park for day visitors something like R20 per person. I will get confirmation on this though. I want to hold this event on the Saturday but run it through into the Sunday. There are two caches currently in the reserve and two in close proximity to the town.

As part of the meeting some of us have looked at doing the cache on Majuba mountain which is roughly 70km travel from the town of Utrecht then possibly all head for Utrecht and have a social get together and stay over for the night. Possibly starting with Majuba early morning while it is still cool. Those who have done it can try the other new caches in the area. We could start meeting in Utrecht from around 2pm.

The town of Utrecht lies within the confines of the Balele Game Park and the Utrecht Community Game Farm, with a total Game Park area of 2500ha. All the mountains that surround the town are part of the Game Park and have been stocked with no fewer than 11 species of game including Impala, Blesbuck, Bushbuck, Waterbuck, Nyala, Red Hartebeest, Blue Wildebeest, Kudu, Burchell's Zebra, Warthog and Giraffe. The town itself lies within a part of the Game Park and the long-term plan is to open the whole area to the town, so that we may see game animals frequenting the outskirts of town, parks and gardens as is already happening with species such as Grey Duiker, Genet and the odd Impala. This is an initiative by the local Town Council in conjunction with the Balele Conservancy and motivated by individual residents in the District. It has, in the last 5 years, brought about a greater awareness of the magnificent natural surroundings of the town and has shifted the focus of the town from industry to tourism.

The co-ordinates will take you to the entrance gate of the campsite.

Quick update. I have spoken to Carol at the camp site. They are moving our group to the tentdorp which has a comunal braai which will suit us on the social side. The rate is R100 per campsite. That is up to 6 people per site. Please call (0343314271) them to confirm that you will be there. Speak to Carol and let her know that you are part of the Geocaching group. She will then know where you are to fit in.
