Summit Point
lookout sits at 7006' and is located near the northeast end of
Baker county. It is staffed during fire season and is pretty easy
to get to even in a passenger car. The hardest part will be the
mile hike to the top which gains over 500 feet. I took the direct
route back to the car and hiked through a patch of new snow. No
wonder the lookout was vacant today.
The route to the L.O. is well marked. Best access is from
highway 86 summit. Turn west onto NFD 77 and follow it to McBride
campground. From there head north 5 miles to the parking area (see
coords posted below).
A 20' platform tower was originally used on the northern summit but
was replaced in 1951 by the present structure. The move was due to
constant fog on the northern end obstructing the view.
